Substrate and background color and color in fish

Post by rvs »

Does the substrate and background color affect color in fish.

I have a breeding group of sunshine peacock cichlids in a 55 gallon. This has black sand and a dark background.

Was wondering if white/lighter sand and a lighter background would better bring out the colors in the male. Especially yellows in fish like the sunshines.

I don’t know much about peacocks, but I use black on black for all my setups. Fish generally try and blend in to whatever the color is.

Thanks for the reply.

I changed to a lighter substrate. My sunshine peacock male shows more yellow on a light substrate than a dark substrate.

I am frankly surprised anyone answered to the post. This forum seems really almost dead when it comes to most posts or traffic.

I do appreciate the response.
