Egg Traps

Post by Rob Tetrazona »

Following Stephen Tanner's example from last month's presentation, I got excited to try out the plastic mesh egg traps that he recommended for egg scatterers. I've been using egg crate wrapped w/ nylon wedding veil mesh, which are time consuming, difficult to make, easy to break or tare, & don't fit inside tanks perfectly. The cut to size plastic mesh for stitching purchased from Joann Fabric was easy to cut down to size & fit in a 5 gallon tank. Good for breeding Tetras, Barbs, & Danios.

Here's 3 plastic mesh style on the left & 1 egg crate style on the right:

I got a Mother load of Cardinal Tetra eggs today using the plastic mesh traps. I also left the the tank uncovered, like I quizzed Stephan about at the last meeting w/ my concern of fertilized eggs being light sensitive for fungal & hatching reasons & everything is looking good. He thought light exposure was not a concern. I got Rummynose Tetra eggs in another tank w/ the same setup. I've been successful in the past breeding both species, but trying see if maybe I was trying to go too far being overly cautious w/ my approach. So far, so good. Thank you, Stephan Tanner!!!

If this method is approved by the one and only Rob Tetrazona...it's a WINNER!

Thanks for the great photos and input Rob!
