RSS feeds

Post by Alex Calder »

Juan and Lisa,

Firefox had no issue linking to the primary rss feed rss.php with no parameters.
However it may be wise to have the file default to rss.php?mode=forums because
rss.php adds Board statistics to the top of the list.

If you would like a hand with this Juan pop me an email with the file.

Alex I really appreciate it. I may need to. I just thought it was too cool an utility to lack here and therefore I searched for what I thought was the nicest one, although is yet not released as "official". I tried several MODS. I have seen in other forums MODS with a link to RSS inside the forums itself, I could not find that particular MOD, this modification we are using lacks that. Hopefully the next version of phoBB3 has the utility included.

Ok, igoogle gave me this:

Not Found: rss.php?mode=forums

I can add it in my RSS feeds in my browser now. However, I rarely look at them that way. I have my rss feeds on my yahoo page. I've got the other ones to work there (new documents and updated species).

Re: RSS feeds

Post by Alex Calder »

I am enjoying a little morning coffee whilst taking a new, to me, Firefox Add-on.
Here is what I learned this morning, Alex hates it when his friend Bill calls and wakes him up for nothing.
Okay so seriously I am running several useful little developer extensions in Firefox. One happens to
contain several of the w3c validators. In typical fashion I run my own site through the RSS feed validator
and then for giggles I pop over here and do it. I find an interesting difference right off the hop.

When I use my own index page the validator finds the feed and goes to town. When I did it here the
validator was unable to find the feed automatically. This of course sparks my curiosity and I start digging.

Just so you can follow here are two links to the validation output.
Both have been directed to find their respective feeds at the index page of each.
CF:
http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi? ... Findex.php
CRC:
http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi? ... Findex.php

Now when one directs it to the feed the feed does validate, but the feed should work automagically.
So at this point all I can think of is to look at the code.

My code:

Code: Select all

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Cichlid Forums RSS Feed" href="external.php?type=RSS2" />
CRC code:

Code: Select all

<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - Start -->
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - The Cichlid Room Companion" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All forums" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=forums" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All Topics" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=topics" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=posts" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - Your posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=egosearch" />
<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - End -->
So that looks good to me and I am a little confused. Perhaps it is time to manually check the feeds.
And bingo the second feed does not work. There are no guarantees that this is causing the feeds
to not be found automatically however it can not be helping any. the rss.php?mode=forums link needs to go.

One more step is needed. Right now the feeds are below the title tags in the header, try shifting them directly above the title.

current:

Code: Select all

<meta name="description" content="" />
<title>The Cichlid Room Companion &bull; Index page</title>

<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - Start-->
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - The Cichlid Room Companion" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All forums" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=forums" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All Topics" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=topics" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=posts" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - Your posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=egosearch" />
<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - End -->
new:

Code: Select all

<meta name="description" content="" />

<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - Start-->
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - The Cichlid Room Companion" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All forums" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=forums" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All Topics" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=topics" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - All posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=posts" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS Feeds - Your posts" href="http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/rss.php?mode=egosearch" />
<!-- // MOD : MSSTI RSS Feeds (V1.0.8) - End -->

<title>The Cichlid Room Companion &bull; Index page</title>
It looks like your meta tags need some tweaking as well.
